Picture Window Replacement in Raleigh NC
One big pane of glass. More light, a clearer view, and the tightest seal of any window.
Bring the Outdoors In
Do you have a view worth showing off? Maybe it is a wooded lot in North Raleigh or a backyard that backs up to a greenway.
A picture window frames that view like a painting. There are no sashes or center rails in the way. Just a wide, clear sheet of glass.
We have installed picture windows in Triangle homes since 1986. They are one of the easiest ways to make a room feel bigger and brighter.
What Is a Picture Window?
A picture window is a fixed window. It does not open.
That might sound like a drawback, but it brings some real benefits:
- The best seal: With no moving parts, there are no gaps for air to sneak through.
- The most glass: No sash frames means more view and more daylight.
- Nothing to wear out: No balances, cranks, or rollers to break.
- Large sizes: Picture windows can be much bigger than windows that open.

Want Fresh Air Too? Pair It Up
Many homeowners like the view of a picture window but still want airflow. The answer is a combination window.
| Combination | How It Looks | Good For |
|---|---|---|
| Picture + two casements | Large center glass with a crank-out window on each side | Living rooms with a great view and a need for cross breeze |
| Picture + two double-hungs | Large center glass between two up-and-down windows | Traditional homes that need a classic look |
| Picture + awning below | Fixed glass on top with a small window that tilts out underneath | Airflow even during a light rain |
| Picture + transom above | Fixed glass with a narrow window or shape on top | Tall walls and extra daylight |
A picture window with angled windows on each side that project out from the wall is called a bay window. Learn more about bay and bow windows.

Where Picture Windows Work Best
- Living rooms and family rooms with a view
- Stairwells and tall walls that are hard to reach
- Dining rooms that face the backyard
- Spots where you want light but do not need airflow
Glass Matters Even More Here
A picture window is almost all glass. On a sunny west wall in July, that glass decides whether the room is comfortable or roasting.
That is why we often recommend upgraded glass for large picture windows. Our Ascent thin triple pane has a solar heat gain rating of 0.19, which blocks most of the sun’s heat while still letting in daylight. Heat Mirror is another strong choice. Compare them on our energy-efficient windows page.
Safety Glass Near Doors and Tubs
Large windows close to the floor, near doors, or beside a tub or shower may need tempered safety glass. We check every opening for this during your estimate so your new windows meet code.

Signs It Is Time to Replace a Picture Window
- Fog or moisture trapped between the panes
- A cloudy or hazy look that does not wipe off
- Drafts or water stains around the frame
- Furniture and floors fading near the window
- The room gets uncomfortably hot every afternoon
Fogged glass is the most common reason we replace picture windows. It means the seal has failed and the insulating gas is gone.
What Do Picture Windows Cost?
Price depends mostly on size and glass. A very large picture window costs more than a small one, and combination units cost more than a single fixed pane.
Most full window projects in Raleigh fall between $6,000 and $40,000. See our window replacement cost guide for more.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do picture windows open?
No. A picture window is fixed. If you want airflow, we can pair it with casement, double-hung, or awning windows on the sides or below.
Are picture windows energy efficient?
Yes. With no moving parts, a picture window seals tighter than any window that opens. Upgraded glass makes it even better at blocking summer heat.
How big can a picture window be?
Much larger than most operable windows. The right size depends on your wall, framing, and glass choice. We will measure and recommend options during your estimate.
Can you make an existing window opening bigger?
Sometimes. Enlarging an opening means changing the wall framing and may need a permit. We will tell you what is possible for your home.
How do I clean the outside of a picture window?
On the first floor, a hose and a soft brush or squeegee work well. For upper floors, an extension pole helps. Many homeowners pick tilt-in windows on the sides for easier cleaning.
