Bay & Bow Window Replacement in Raleigh NC
Add light, space, and curb appeal with a window that reaches out from your home.
A Window That Changes the Whole Room
Have you ever wished your living room felt a little bigger? Or that your breakfast nook got more morning sun?
Bay and bow windows do both. They push out past the wall of your home, adding a few feet of space and letting light in from three or more directions.
They also make a big impression from the street. On a brick ranch in Garner or a Colonial in North Hills, a new bay or bow window can change the whole front of the house.
Bay vs. Bow: What Is the Difference?
People often mix them up. Both project out from the wall, but they are built differently.
| Bay Window | Bow Window | |
|---|---|---|
| Number of windows | Usually 3 | Usually 4 to 6 |
| Shape | Angled, with a large center window and two side windows | A gentle curve of equal-sized windows |
| How far it projects | Further out | Less, with a softer arc |
| Look | Crisp and geometric | Rounded and classic |
| Best for | Window seats and nooks | Wide walls and panoramic views |
| Relative cost | $$$ | $$$ (more windows can mean a higher price) |
What Goes Into a Bay Window?
A bay usually has a large picture window in the center. The side windows are often casements or double-hungs so you can open them for fresh air.
What Goes Into a Bow Window?
A bow is a row of matching windows set in a curve. Some are fixed and some can open, often casements. The result is a soft, sweeping view.

Why Bay and Bow Windows Are Different to Install
These windows hang out past the wall of your home. That makes them heavier and more complex than a flat window.
A proper install includes:
- Support: Cables or brackets to carry the weight and keep the unit from sagging over time
- A roof or cap: To shed rain and keep water out of the top of the unit
- Insulated seat and head boards: The inside shelf and top need insulation, or they will feel cold in winter and hot in summer
- Careful flashing: To keep water from getting into the wall around the opening
Skipping any of these causes the most common bay window problems we see. Does your current bay have any of these issues?
Signs Your Bay or Bow Window Needs Replacing
- The unit sags, or you see a gap at the top
- The window seat feels cold in winter or hot in summer
- Water stains on the ceiling or seat below the window
- Soft or rotted wood on the seat board or roof
- Fog between the panes in one or more windows
- Side windows that stick or will not open
Many bay windows from the 1980s and 1990s were built with little insulation underneath. Replacing them can make the whole room feel more comfortable.
Glass Choices for More Comfort
A bay or bow window has a lot of glass facing several directions. That means it takes in sun for much of the day.
Upgraded glass helps keep the room comfortable. Choose standard double pane, Heat Mirror, or Ascent thin triple pane. See our energy-efficient windows page to compare.
What Do Bay and Bow Windows Cost?
Bay and bow windows cost more than flat windows. You are paying for several windows joined together, plus the support, roof cap, and interior finish work.
The price depends on:
- The size and number of windows in the unit
- Which windows open and which are fixed
- Your glass package
- The roof or cap style
- Whether the opening needs repairs or framing changes
Most full window projects in Raleigh fall between $6,000 and $40,000. Read our window replacement cost guide for more on pricing.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between a bay and a bow window?
A bay window usually has three windows set at angles, with a large one in the middle. A bow window has four or more equal windows set in a gentle curve.
Can you turn a flat window into a bay or bow window?
Often, yes. It may require changes to the wall framing and possibly a permit. We will look at your opening and tell you what is possible.
Do bay windows add value to a home?
They can. Bay and bow windows add light, space, and curb appeal, which many buyers like. The value depends on your home and neighborhood.
Can I have a window seat in my bay window?
Yes. The seat board inside a bay makes a natural window seat. With proper insulation underneath, it stays comfortable year-round.
How long does it take to install a bay or bow window?
Most take one to two days once the window arrives. Because each unit is custom made, most jobs start 3 to 4 weeks after you book.
Do you offer financing?
Yes. We offer financing options and can go over them at your free estimate.
