Double-Hung Window Replacement in Raleigh NC

The classic window, rebuilt for today. Custom sized, easy to clean, and built to seal tight.

The Most Common Window in Raleigh Homes

Walk down almost any street in Raleigh and you will see double-hung windows. They fit the Craftsman bungalows in Five Points, the brick ranches in North Raleigh, and the newer two-story homes in Wakefield.

Why are they so popular? They look right on almost any style of home, and they are simple to use.

Replacing old double-hung windows is one of the jobs we do most often. Since 1986, we have swapped out thousands of them across the Triangle.

What Is a Double-Hung Window?

A double-hung window has two sashes that slide up and down. Both the top and bottom sash can open.

That small detail makes a big difference:

  • Better airflow: Open the top and bottom a few inches each. Warm air leaves through the top while cooler air comes in at the bottom.
  • Safer ventilation: Open only the top sash in a child’s room for fresh air without a low opening.
  • Easy cleaning: Both sashes tilt in, so you can clean the outside glass from inside your home. No ladder needed on the second floor.

Double-Hung vs. Single-Hung

A single-hung window looks almost the same, but only the bottom sash moves. The top is fixed.

Many builder-grade homes in the Triangle came with single-hung windows. Upgrading to double-hung is a common request when those windows wear out.

Signs Your Double-Hung Windows Are Done

Older double-hung windows tend to fail in the same ways. Do any of these sound familiar?

  • The sash slams down or will not stay open (a worn balance)
  • Painted-shut wood sashes that will not move at all
  • Rattling in the wind or a draft where the two sashes meet
  • Fog between the panes
  • Soft or rotted wood on the sill
  • Locks that no longer line up

If two or more apply, replacement usually makes more sense than repair.

Built Better Than the Original

Our double-hung windows are custom made for each opening. That matters in older Raleigh homes, where few windows are a standard size.

The Ascent series is a great fit for double-hung openings. Its ratings were tested on a double-hung window:

  • U-factor of 0.19 (as low as 0.16 with krypton gas)
  • Solar heat gain of 0.19 to block summer heat
  • Air leakage of just 0.03, far tighter than a typical vinyl window
  • A full-length meeting rail interlock where the two sashes meet, which is where old double-hungs leak the most

The thin triple-pane glass is also up to 40% lighter than standard triple pane. That means the sashes are easier to lift and the balances last longer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are double-hung windows energy efficient?

Yes, when they are built well. A quality double-hung window with tight interlocks and good weatherstripping seals very well. Pair it with triple-pane or Heat Mirror glass for the best results in Raleigh’s heat.

Can you replace single-hung windows with double-hung?

Yes. In most cases, a double-hung window fits the same opening. It is one of the easiest upgrades you can make.

How long does it take to replace double-hung windows?

Most homes take one to two days once the windows arrive. Because each window is custom made, most jobs start 3 to 4 weeks after you book.

Do new double-hung windows tilt in for cleaning?

Yes. Both sashes tilt in, so you can clean both sides of the glass from inside your home.

Do you offer financing?

Yes. We offer financing options and can go over them at your free estimate.
